On November 17, 1920, in Seymour, Missouri, I was born. My parents were JeweIl (Shumate) Mashburn, and Joseph Davis Mashburn. I was named Virginia Helen Mashburn. I was named for my two grandmothers, Virginia (Davis) Mashburn, and Clara Helen (Wiggington) Shumate.

Shortly after my birth daddy developed Tuberculosis so we went to Colorado, for a climate change. We lived at Boulder and Fort Collins. The Colorado climate arrested the Tuberculosis, which was the result of having the' Flu in France at the end of World War II. After staying in Colorado for a year and a half, we returned to Missouri.

Daddy took some College courses in Colorado. I do not what they were. We went to Marionville, Missouri south of Springfield for a while where he studied Poultry.

After our stay at Marionville we went to Seymour. We also spent some time in Springfield. Grandpa Shumate died during this period. He was John Shumate.

It wasn't long until we moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Grandma Shumate and two of mother's sisters did too.

We stayed in Kansas City right at five years. Grandma stayed as long as we did. One of my aunts died, the other one went to Chicago and got married.

I went to school at George B. Longan, Kindergarten through third grade. The school was on 39th Street about two or three blocks from Main Street, a popular shopping district at that time.
